Seek Refuge in Allah

ʿayn wāw dhāl

aʿūdhu (verb) = to seek refuge

maʿādha (noun, masculine) = seeking refuge in Allah

Surah Hud 47 :

qāla      rabbi     innī     aʿūdhu     bika     an    asalaka    mā    laysa    lī    bihi    ʿil’mun      wa-illā  taghfir lī    watarḥamnī    akun    mina    l-khāsirīna
(Nuh) said, “My Lord, I seek refuge in You from asking that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have mercy upon me, I will be among the losers.”

Surah Maryam 18 :

qālat      innī       aʿūdhu       bil-raḥmāni    minka     in    kunta     taqiyyan
(Maryam) said, “Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, (so leave me) if you should be fearing of Allah.”

Surah Al ‘Imran 36 :

falammā      waḍaʿathā        qālat      rabbi     innī    waḍaʿtuhā     unthā    wal-lahu     aʿlamu     bimā     waḍaʿat     walaysa     l-dhakaru     kal-unthā   wa-innī    sammaytuhā    maryama  wa-innī    uʿīdhuhā  bika   wadhurriyyatahā  mina  l-shayṭāni  l-rajīmi
But when (the wife of Imran) delivered her, she said, “My Lord, I have delivered a female.” And Allah was most knowing of what she delivered, “And the male is not like the female. And I have named her Maryam    and I seek refuge for her and her descendants in You, from Satan the expelled.”

Surah Yusuf 23 :

warāwadathu  allatī  huwa  fī  baytihā   ʿan   nafsihi   waghallaqati   l-abwāba   waqālat   hayta   laka      qāla      maʿādha      l-lahi      innahu     rabbī     aḥsana     mathwāya     innahu     lā     yuf’liḥu     l-ẓālimūna
And she, in whose house Yusuf was, sought to seduce him. She closed the doors and said, “Come on, you.” (Yusuf) said, “[I seek] the refuge of Allah. Indeed, He is my master, who has made good my residence. Indeed, wrongdoers will not succeed.”

Surah Ghafir 27 :

waqāla  mūsā   innī    ʿudh’tu    birabbī    warabbikum    min   kulli   mutakabbirin   lā    yu’minu    biyawmi   l-ḥisābi
But Musa said, “Indeed, I have sought refuge (in Allah) my Lord and your Lord, from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Account.”

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “I noticed the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was missing one night and I found him prostrating with the tops of his feet facing toward the Qiblah. I heard him saying:  I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your wrath; I seek refuge in Your forgiveness from Your punishment; I seek refuge in You from You. I cannot praise You enough, You are as You have praised Yourself.”
